The basis of the analysis
Road network
For travels by car are calculated driving time and distance with a so called model for route election in a geographic information system (GIS). This contains the overall road network including information on speed limits. Precaution has been taken to ensure that the calculated road network is covering an area big enough to allow correct calculation of average driving times of three hours or more from each airport. The road network also contains the important ferry services where the time of crossing is a weighting of travel time and frequency.
From each of the seven airports is calculated the fastest route. No considerations have been paid to capacity conditions.
Public transportation
With regards to the public transportation all travel times are extracted from the current timetable which can be found on the international timetable http://www.rejseplan.dk/.
All travel times are calculated/extracted for one periode on a workday not including rush hour. This selection substantiates by the fact that the passengers' arrival to the airports does not distinctly coincide with rush hour traffic on the surrounding road network. Concurrently the distance to the airport is so far for many passengers that for the majority of the journey they will travel before or after the rush hour period.
The 7 airports are used as the central point for the calculations/extractions in one end. In the other end are used units such as:
-
Councils in Denmark (split before 1/1-2007)
-
Councils in Sweden
-
Constituencies in northern Germany
-
Other parts of Germany, Norway, The Netherlands and Poland (NUTS3)
One station/terminal has been chosen as central point in each unit.
COWI has completed the calculations on the basis of the current situation.
