Environmental policy
Environmental activities at CPH take place within the framework of CPH’s overall environmental policy. Consequently, as an environmentally responsible organisation, CPH is operated and developed in such a way as to achieve continually improved environmental results. Improvements are made through constant attention to environmental aspects in all decisions, preventive action, cleaner technologies, increased environmental awareness among employees and partners, and an open dialogue about the environmental impact of the Company.
As part of the Company's environmental policy, CPH's Supervisory Board adopted a target in 2007: that the Company will ensure a reduction of its CO2 emissions from the activities in Copenhagen by 21% in 2012 compared with 1990. CPH has set a target for cuts in its CO2 emissions that is in line with Denmark’s national obligations under the Kyoto Protocol and the European agreement on allocation of burdens, since, as an international traffic hub and a crucial part of the national infrastructure, CPH wishes to assume its share of the responsibility.
In order to ensure that CPH follows its CO2 policy, consumption of non-renewable energy will be reduced as much as possible, always taking into account developments in traffic. This minimisation will be achieved and maintained through a reduction in power consumption in Copenhagen Airport of at least 10% over the next five years, continuous monitoring of energy consumption, evaluation of new technologies with a view to potential implementation and evaluation of the effect of the energy policy.
In 2007, CPH’s CO2 emissions amounted to 32,761 tonnes, equivalent to 1.5 kg per passenger. The largest source of CO2-emissions at CPH is related to power consumption, which is why CPH has adopted an individual target for a reduction in power consumption: 10 % in 2012 compared with 2007. In 2007, power consumption was 161 TJ or 45 million KWh. This means that power consumption must be reduced to 40 million KWh in 2012.
