More space and better facilities

The transit area at Copenhagen Airport is going to be expanded and redesigned in 2007. The area will therefore be affected by construction work in the coming period.

Passengers can look forward to more space and better facilities in the transit area of Copenhagen Airport. Until 2009, the airport is going to invest a triple-digit amount in millions of Danish kroner in expanding and redesigning the transit area to include new walkways and seating areas, restaurants and shops. The transit area will be affected by these changes already in the coming months.

A new central security checkpoint will change the passenger flow

Next summer, Copenhagen Airport’s new central security checkpoint will open, replacing the existing checkpoints. In addition to better conditions in the screening area, the passenger flow through the transit area will change as all passengers will enter the transit area in the same place in the central part of the area, unlike the current layout where passengers enter the area in either Terminal 2 or Terminal 3.

“The new central access point will give a better passenger flow than today, but the transit area must be redesigned to accommodate the change. Moreover, passenger numbers are increasing year by year, so more space is needed. We will therefore start up a number of changes and the expansion of the transit area already now,” said Vice President Mogens Kornbo of Copenhagen Airports A/S.

The first major expansion will take place by the square in Terminal 2, where all passengers will enter the transit area in future. Here, the key element will be a new information area with information counters and screens showing flight departures.

The large Tax-Free store will be closed for refurbishment

There will be changes in the transit area already during the next few months. On 1 March 2007, a new concessionaire, German-based Gebr. Heinemann, takes over the airport’s duty- and tax-free shops, and a comprehensive refurbishment of the large central Tax-Free store in Terminal 2 will commence. Due to this project, the store will be closed from 1 March until 1 June 2007.

Instead, a new temporary Tax-Free store will be established in the square in Terminal 3. In order to make space for this store, a number of shops and cafes in the area will move to other, temporary locations. The refurbishment of the large Tax-Free store in Terminal 2 also means that some of the shops in that area will close or move.

“In the coming months, the transit area will be affected by a number of barriers, closures and temporary facilities, but we will make every effort to ensure that passengers are inconvenienced as little as possible. At the end of the day, the changes will give passengers better conditions and facilities in the transit area,” said Kornbo.
