Metro direct to airport in 2007
Starting in October 2007, it will be possible to take the Metro direct to the airport. By then, the third phase of the Metro construction project and thus also the airport station – named “Lufthavnen” – will be finished.
The two tracks to the airport will be laid out across the island of Amager and end at the tip of the wing-shaped Terminal 3, on the top floor of the multi-storey carpark to the west of the Hilton Copenhagen Airport building.
Metro passengers will be able to walk from the station to Terminal 3 in just a few minutes, without having to brave the elements outdoors.
The world's best infrastructure
“The station is designed to live up to Copenhagen Airport's goal to provide a high level of service: arriving Metro passengers will be able to walk directly from the station to the check-in counters without having to go outdoors. We have also found a solution with a design consistent with the other architecture at the airport. There is no doubt that the new Metro station will make Copenhagen Airport one of the airports in the world with the very best infrastructure. We have the Øresund bridge, the motorway, regional and intercity trains and, from 2007, also Metro service directly to the airport,” said Mogens Kornbo, vice president with Copenhagen Airports.
25,000 passengers a day
The third phase of the Metro construction project, the stretch between the Lufthavnen and Lergravsparken stations, will be 4.5 kilometres long. The four stations between the Lergravsparken and Lufthavnen stations are Øresund, Amager Strand, Femøren and Kastrup. The trip from the Copenhagen city centre to Lufthavnen station will take 14 minutes. The Ørestad Development Corporation expects the station to carry some 6500 passengers per weekday by 2010.
The construction has been underway since the spring of 2004. The Ørestad Development Corporation is in charge of the construction of the tracks across Amager, whilst Copenhagen Airport is the client and owner of the airport station, which was designed by Vilhelm Lauritzen Arkitekter.
