In Southern and Northern Jutland they prefer to fly to Copenhagen
The domestic service between Sønderborg and Copenhagen has recorded double-digit growth rates this summer. As in Northern Jutland, people from the South Jutland region recognise the advantages of flying to Copenhagen rather than travelling by car or train.
More and more people from Southern Jutland choose the fast and easy way to Copenhagen and travel by air rather than by car or train. This summer, Cimber Sterling has been offering especially cheap fares on the route on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Sønderborg Airport. That has made more people choose air transport to Copenhagen.
In July alone, Sønderborg Airport recorded 55% year-on-year growth in passenger numbers. To a great extent, leisure travellers now also see the benefits of flying to their destination, whether the purpose is to go on holiday, visit family and friends or connect to flights on the more than 120 international routes out of Copenhagen Airport.
“We have succeeded in making people from Southern Jutland and North Schleswig aware of how easy and convenient it is to fly to Copenhagen from Sønderborg. The flying time is just 35 minutes, and from Copenhagen Airport the city centre can be reached by metro or train in only 10-15 minutes. Moreover, passengers travelling on from Copenhagen can check their baggage to many end destinations already at Sønderborg,” said Anders Sørensen, Airport Manager at Sønderborg Airport.
The easy way into the world
The increase in passenger numbers between Sønderborg and Copenhagen is a good example that domestic flights compete very well with the alternative of travelling by car and train – not least to and from the areas of Denmark that are the furthest away from Copenhagen. More and more Danes are realising this, said Carsten Nørland, VP Aviation, Copenhagen Airports.
“The biggest domestic route, the route between Aalborg and Copenhagen, has recorded double-digit growth rates in recent months and like people in Northern Jutland, people in Southern Jutland are now increasingly choosing the fast way to Copenhagen,” said Nørland.
“As the main airport of Scandinavia, we see the domestic route network as an important infrastructure element that ensures easy access to the world from all of Denmark via the domestic routes and Copenhagen Airport. We therefore collaborate with the provincial airports to make it easy for passengers to fly to international destinations via their local airport and Copenhagen,” said Nørland.
